Oak offcuts

Oak offcuts

Oak offcuts are the honest offcut from the furniture edit, sold short so a joint can be learned.

We do not call them a project kit. There is no plan in the bundle. The grain is the same oak as the tables, in lengths that fit a bench hook. Use them to see how this oak planes, how it splits if you rush the chisel, and how the colour sits under oil.

Then, if you are making the real piece, buy the board. The offcut was the rehearsal.

Practice on the offcut until the joint fits, then cut the real piece once.

The first dovetail in a good board is how a board becomes firewood. A short block from the same oak shows you the fit, the angle, and whether the chisel is sharp. The project board waits.

“
Short blocks teach a joint without wasting a board.

Label the offcut with the board it came from.

Grain and colour are a pair. A practice joint in a different oak lies about how the real joint will look. Write the board number on the end grain. End grain is the part you will not see.

Keep offcuts long enough to hold. A scrap you cannot clamp is not practice. It is a risk to the fingers. If the block is shorter than your hand, it is kindling, not a lesson.

Stack them flat, stickered if the shop is damp, so they do not cup before you need them. A cupped practice piece teaches the wrong thing.

When the offcut has done its job, it can be a handle, a wedge, or heat. It does not need a second life as a small object you did not want.

Same wood, short length, one joint at a time. Then the board.

Sharp tools matter more than more wood. If the chisel crushes the fibre on the offcut, it will crush it on the piece. Stop and hone.
