Table set
A table set is a small list, repeated until it feels inevitable.
Start with the surface. If the table is wood you care about, the cloth or the mat is not decoration. It is the layer that takes the heat and the spill. Then the plate or the bowl you use most nights, not the set kept for guests. Guests can eat from the same bowl. The evening is calmer when you are not swapping cupboards.
Light sits above or to the side, warm enough to see the food and low enough that nobody squints. One source is usually enough.
One cloth, one bowl, one light. Add only what the meal needs.
A weekday supper wants a cloth you can wash, a bowl that stacks, and a light that does not glare on the plate. The extra candlestick can stay in the cupboard until there is a reason.
“
Set the table for the meal you actually eat, not for a photograph of twelve.
The cloth should survive the wash you will actually give it.
Linen that demands a press after every supper will live in a drawer. Choose the weave you can launder and put back before the next meal.
Height of a bowl matters if you eat soup or noodles. A shallow bowl looks light and spills. A deep one hides the food. We keep a middle depth in the home edit for that reason.
Glass should be short enough to pass and heavy enough not to feel nervous. A very thin glass is a different kind of meal.
Flowers, if you want them, stay low. A tall stem between two people is a wall. A small bowl of stems at the end of the table is a note, not a centrepiece.
Clear the table the same evening. A set that is washed and back in reach is the one you will use tomorrow. A set that is a project will not.
Weeknight first. The longer meal can borrow the same pieces.
