Linen care

Linen care

Linen care is a wash, a dry, and a refusal to fight the crease.

The cloth wrinkles because of what it is. Pressing it into a board-flat sheet makes it look nervous and lasts until you sit down. Shake it out, smooth the worst of the fold, and use it. A table cloth in particular wants to look as if a meal could happen, not as if a presser just left.

Wash when it is actually marked. Linen can air between uses. Soap should be gentle, and the spin should not wring the life out of a hem.

Wash cool, dry out of the sun, and fold while it is just damp if you want fewer creases.

A hot dryer shrinks the cloth past the size we finished. Line dry in the shade, or flat, and smooth it with your hands. An iron is optional, and it should be warm, not hot.

“
Linen looks right when it has been washed and not when it has been perfected.

The first washes settle the size. That is not a fault.

Linen relaxes and tightens a little as it meets water. Hems and throws in this edit are cut with that settle in mind. If a piece shrinks far past the note, tell us.

Stains want cold water at once. Wine and oil move further if you rub. Blot, then wash the whole piece so the wet patch does not become a tide mark.

Store linen clean, dry, and not in plastic. A cupboard that breathes keeps the smell of soap instead of the smell of a closed box. Refold occasionally so the crease does not become the only shape the cloth knows.

A throw can live on a sofa and be washed when it asks. Do not wait for it to look grey. Do not wash it every time someone sat down.

Follow the line on the piece if it disagrees with a general laundry article. That line was written for this cloth.

Washed, shaken, used. Linen is doing its job when it looks lived in.
